Technically, Maureen is a performance artist. Perhaps the most well-known group of performance artists in the world is Blue Man Group.
BOHEME BACKSTORY:
The character of Maureen is based on La Boheme’s Musetta. The main theme in “Musetta’s Waltz” from Boheme is stuck in Roger’s head while he’s trying to write his “one song.”
THE FIRST ‘MAUREEN’:
In RENT’s Original Broadway Production, the role of Maureen was played by Idina Menzel, who went on to star in Wicked on Broadway. She is married to Taye Diggs, who originated the role of Benny.
